Montgomery Raccoon Control Tip: How to Get a Raccoon Out of a Tree
As humans encroach into wild habitats, our interactions with wild animals is ever-increasing. Over the past few decades, raccoons have learned to thrive in urban settlements by relying on our leftovers and living in our attics, chimneys, and crawlspaces.

In the wild, however, raccoons rest in the hollows of high trees during the day as they are nocturnal. But as humans, we all have an underlying predilection towards plant life. We all love to have trees on our properties where we can relax and soak in the evening breeze. Tending to our gardens also help us form a deeper connection with our surroundings.

Unfortunately, all of this is also good news for raccoons. Raccoons are always on the lookout for trees on properties where they can take up residence. Living in such a tree provides them close proximity to food sources in the trash cans, bird feeders, garden, and even the fruits on the tree itself. If you're dealing with a raccoon on a tree, this post will explore several ways you can get rid of it.

Signs of Raccoons in Trees
Sightings of raccoons are rare due to the nocturnal nature of these critters. However, there are tell-tale signs that may indicate the presence of raccoons in trees.

  • Dirty tracks around the base of the tree
As the raccoon leaves the tree at dusk and returns at dawn, it leaves tracks around the base of the tree. The tracks are distinct in their resemblance to the hands of babies.

  • Scratches on tree barks
Raccoons have sharp claws, which they use to support themselves as they climb trees. If you notice scratches on the tree bark, there might be a raccoon residing there. Raccoons also use their claws to scratch walls and fences.

  • Sounds at night
If you hear chattering, growling, or snarling sounds coming from your tree at night, it's a strong indication that you have a raccoon living there.

  • Droppings
Raccoons typically defecate close to where they reside. Noticing droppings at the base of trees points to the existence of a raccoon population in your vicinity.

Getting Raccoons Out of Trees
If you've confirmed that you have raccoons living in a tree on your property, there are several things you can do to get it out.

  • Spray with a garden hose
This is the simplest option for getting raccoons out of trees. Attach a sprayer to a garden hose and spray directly on the animal. Keep spraying until the raccoon climbs or falls down the tree branch and leaves. This method is safe because you get to keep a safe distance from the animal while sending it away.

  • Trapping
Trapping is also an effective way of getting rid of a raccoon on a tree. Set the trap near the base of the tree. Examples of common baits you can use include canned tuna, cat food, roasted chicken, and peanut butter. Once the trap catches the raccoon, it can be relocated at least 10 miles from your property, so it doesn't return. Ensure that you handle the trap properly during relocation, so you do not injure the raccoon or yourself.

  • Deterrents and repellents
Raccoons are sensitive to high-frequency noise. You can use one to scare them off from the tree. They are also sensitive to bright light as they are nocturnal. That means you can use a strong flashlight to scare them off.

Raccoons are also scared of coyotes as they are one of their natural predators. Try spraying coyote urine near the base of the tree. You can get coyote urine from hunter shops or farm supply centers. Within a night or two, the raccoon will go packing out of fear.

  • Wildlife professionals
Raccoons are wild animals, and as such, they are unpredictable and may respond violently. That's why it's best to get a wildlife removal expert involved when dealing with a raccoon on a tree problem. Raccoons also carry many transmittable diseases so do not try to handle them if you have no idea how to go about it. Wildlife experts are well-trained in wildlife resolution, and they have the necessary tools to carry out their job while staying safe.
